A woman gestures with curiosity while learning the differences between 'wann', 'wenn', and 'als' in German.

What is the Difference Between ‘wann’, ‘wenn’, and ‘als’ in German? 🤔🇩🇪

Hallo zusammen! 👋

We recently received a question from Mark, asking about the difference between ‘wann’, ‘wenn’, and ‘als’.

This blog will help you understand how to use these words correctly in different contexts. 📚📝

Explanation:

Wann means when. It is used when we ask questions about time.
  • For example:
Wann kommst du? (When are you coming?)

Wenn can mean if or when. It is used with conditions or to refer to repeated events.

  • For example:
Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause. (If it rains, I stay home.)
    Or:
Wenn ich Zeit habe, gehe ich spazieren. (When I have time, I go for a walk.)

Als also means when, but it’s used to speak about single events in the past.

  • For example:
Als ich klein war, hatte ich einen Hund. (When I was little, I had a dog.)

Summary:

To differentiate between wann, wenn, and als:
  • Use wann to ask questions about time.
  • Use wenn to refer to conditions or repeated events.
  • Use als to speak about single events in the past.

Extra Examples:

Here are some extra examples to help you practice:
  1. Wann bist du geboren?
(When were you born?) – Asking about time
  2. Wenn ich dich sehe, freue ich mich.
(When I see you, I am happy.) – Repeated event
  3. Als ich nach Deutschland kam, lernte ich viel.
(When I came to Germany, I learned a lot.) – Single past event
